Henson Valley Christian Church

Theological Foundation for Ministries

Worship and service at Henson Valley Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are at the intersection of the Greatest Commandment and the Great Commission.

The Greatest Commandment

Of all the commandments, which is the most important?

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’  The second is this:  ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no commandment greater than these.”  (Mark 12: 29 – 31, NRSV)

We love God because God first loves us.  When we have experienced God’s love, we are able to share that love with others.  This love that begins with God is the kind of love that compels us to build relationships with all whom God loves – and all means all – to the end that healing, hope, and wholeness is experienced, especially by those who are counted as the least among us.

The Great Commission

Jesus said to his disciples, “God authorized and commanded me to commission you:  Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you.  I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age. (Matthew 28: 17 – 20, The Message)

And what is “this way of life” in which Jesus has instructed his disciples and is calling his disciples to instruct others?   This way of life is not about “right” belief.  It is about “right” practice, every day of life – doing what Jesus did and loving as Jesus loved.

This is what Henson Valley Christian Church is seeking to do.  We are seeking to become a missional church where the goal is not to increase membership for the purpose of maintaining the institution.  We are seeking to connect with people in ways that allow them to experience the love of God through us and having experienced this love, to share it with others as well.

Please refer to the Calendar for opportunities to participate in the ministries of the congregation.
